Wakestock 2012 Battle of the Bands Competition – Winners are Dolgellau based band Sŵnami

Wakestock 2012 launched an ace competition back in May for a band to win a coveted slot to play on the Wakestock stage. We are stoked to be able to announce Sŵnami as the worthy winners.

Dolgellau based Sŵnami will take to the stage alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal, to name but a few. They will open the East Stage at the festival on Sunday 8th July. We spoke to Tom Ayres from Sŵnami who told us

“The 5 of us are so excited to be playing Wakestock, we’ve always been massive fans of the festival, and to be coming back this year to play is a huge honour, especially since we’re sharing the stage with Welsh bands like Straight Lines and F4AF, as well as legends like All American Rejects!”
This is a fantastic opportunity for an unsigned act trying to get a break in what is a hugely competitive industry. The team at Wakestock HQ prepared a short list of finalists, and the final decision was down to Radio Cymru DJ Lisa Gwilym. Lisa hosts her own flagship music show every weekday evening on BBC Radio Cymru. She’s a true champion of new music, has been a BBC Radio Cymru presenter since 2003 and has always taken a keen interest in Wales’s music talent. Lisa tells us

“All ten bands on the shortlist would have been amazing bands for the festival, but in the end, I’ve gone for a band who I know will create a huge impression on the crowds at Wakestock. They’re a band we’ve been supporting on my C2 show for a couple of years – Sŵnami from Dolgellau. A couple of months ago they won two awards at the BBC Radio Cymru Rock and Pop Awards (Best New Band, and C2 Session of the year), and they’re destined to be one of the must see Welsh Language bands of this year. I wish them all the best at Wakestock.”

We received a huge number of applications to play and are excited about the talent that abounds in the region! Sadly we just can’t accommodate them all.
