There are 3 venues for the wakeboarding and 4 days of action in total. The main contest takes place in Pwllhelli Marina, just under 2 miles from the festival site. 2 epic rails are built and riders will be towed behind a Malibu Wakesetter. In each run a rider can fit in over 10 wake style tricks and hit each rail. New for 2009 is the Relentless Loviathan, a floating rail purpose built for Relentless Wakestock. With over ten entry points to the rail, riders will be able to work the rail in a variety of different ways, with transfers, gaps and rail tricks all possible. It will be interesting to see how technical people get on it and see riders style and identity really showing through. Rail masters like Marc Rossiter and Matt Crowhurst are well worth keeping an eye out for.
The wake from the Malibu Wakesetter will be kicking up the perfect platform for riders to get booted into the air. Style demon Sean O’Brien from the US Malibu Team is heading over and all of the UK’s big names are coming including World Champion Nick Davies, past winners Dan Nott and Jonty Green and many others like Sam Carne, Ben Hitch, James Young and up and coming riders like Freddy Carter and Jorge Gill.
Thursday is practice day and all the riders get the opportunity to dial their skills on the purpose built rails and Malibu wake. Friday is the amateur day and will see 16 male riders competing for 3 spots to advance to the next round and 3 female riders trying to progress into the women’s final. Saturday is the pro qualifier and its hot competition this year. With more entries than ever before the standard of riding has never been so hot! 20 pros will be fighting out for 6 places in the final and the chance to hit the jackpot on Sunday. The women’s final also takes place on Saturday and the winner will take home £1500. The highlight happens on Sunday with the pro men final! 20 of the world’s finest wakeboarders will battle out for thousands of pounds and the honour of being a Wakestock Champion. Last year saw all 3 spots on the podium being taken by US riders so you can expect the British contingent to be fighting for revenge and their honour.
The second venue for the wakeboarding is the Big Air competition on Abersoch Beach on Friday night. Starting at 5pm it is a 2 hour jam and the winner is the guy or girl who goes biggest! Two Yamaha WaveRunners will tow the riders around the course. They use a floating kicker to perform a trick of their choice. Biggest air gets £500 for their troubles.
The third venue is the Pool Gap on the festival site and this allows the wake action to continue well into the night. With wakeskating jams and the Rococo Rail Tour all taking place there is money to be won! All the wakeboard venues are linked together by shuttle buses and could be walked if needed. Make sure you check the timings and don’t miss out on the action.
